Oscar DIY: Phantom Thread Copycat

It's Oscar Week and we're remaking a few of my favorite looks from this year's best films!

First up:

When I saw this I knew there would be some sort of outfit making to be had! It's all about a tailor and his muse during the 50s.

Phantom Thread: Red Lace Dress Costume

This dress was one of my faves from the film and knew it was one that I had to remake!

First up, find a red dress to use for the base! I had this number in my closet ready for an upgrade!

Phantom Thread - Before Dress

It's from the 70s, totally giving off the DVF wrap dress vibe...

...but definitely needing a bit of a refresh. Phantom Thread copycat, here we go!

Phantom Thread - Before Dress 3

I snagged my materials at Joann (all about that lace, bout that lace...) and channeled my inner Reynolds Woodcock!

Phantom Thread - Materials

I started by removing the collar on the neck of my dress...

...and then cut my sleeves short to match the dress from the film.

Then it was lace time! I had to add lace to the skirt, the sleeve cuffs, and the neckline.

Phantom Thread - Lace!

Once everything was pinned...

Phantom Thread - New sleeves!

...it was time to sew it all in place!

My look was complete!

Phantom Thread Dress - After

I am totally feeling the 50s!

PS...for those who have seen the film, you'll totally understand the next photo

And if you haven't seen this, the costumes are just next level! Such gorgeous gowns!

DIY NYE Rhinestone Skirt (á la Dolce & Gabbana)

The holidays are in full swing! Christmas might be over but New Year’s is just a few days away and let’s be honest, I’m not taking the tree down until at least mid-January :) But this year I wanted to make something special to wear to ring in 2018. It’s a big year - it’ll be my first one as a married gal and I couldn’t be happier to spend it with my husband!

So, after doing some Pinterest scouring, I remembered one of my favorite looks by Dolce & Gabbana. A totally blinged out skirt that has been in my To-DIY Board for a bit.

Dolce & Gabbana Embellished Skirt

The colors are rich and it’s super shiny (hay rhinestones, HAYYYYYY!) making this the perfect look to recreate for the 31st!. I needed to find a skirt and scored the perfect skater style version in mustard at the Salvation Army.

DIY Mustard Skirt - Before

I was looking for something brocade but thought this could do the trick! It’s a bit large, but nothing that a quick stitch can’t fix.

Next it was off to find all the trimmings to put onto the skirt! I went ribbon and accoutrement scouring at JOANN and found some stellar ribbon rope...

...not to mention rhinestones for days to add to this puppy.  PS, anyone needs a few, you know where to come!

Joann Rhinestones

I started off adjusting the skirt to fit me. I pinned, I stitched, I conquered.

Next it was time to sort out how I was going to decorate the skirt. With my slew of stones, ribbons, and studs, this skirt was a canvas just waiting for everything to be placed on it. The gold rope/cord was placed down first.

To make the skirt symmetrical, I matched the roping on both sides of the skirt securing it in place with pins!

Next I took some gold cording and began to wrap it around a few of the rounder gems. This  gave the stones a more finished and sleek look.

Now it was time to place the gems and secure in place with glue! I went with the heavy duty E6000 which is safe for fabric and washing!

(This is going to be a hand wash operation for me and I’m just keeping fingers crossed that I don’t happen to get overly excited during the countdown and spill something on myself!)

I just glued my last stone!!

And to really mimic that D&G look, I paired my skirt with a star top!

NYE After Mustard Skirt DIY

(Sidenote - that “top” is really a dress! It’s a thrifted Barney’s COOP silk dress that I added the skirt on top of!)

I love how this skirt came to fruition just by taking something I was obsessed with and adding my own little twist to it.

I love the flowy vibe but also the rich gem colors! (I stuck to the reds/golds/silvers.)

It’s got the bling to stay sparkly while watching the ball drop!

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

It’s more like “bling in the new year” with this new skirt!! Sorry, sorry, I just couldn’t help it!

Wishing you the most creative, chic, DIY-filled and beautiful new year!

DIY Holiday Poncho

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of JOANN. The opinions and text are all mine.

The holidays are right around the corner which means there's a whole lot of travel (who else is braving the airports like I am this year?), family (my mom is already talking about day trips), food (banana pudding is going to be in FULL EFFECT - hello NC!) and warm and cozy outfits (get ready for this project) going on!

To prep for some time away from LA to watch sleigh bells ring in Charlotte, I thought a poncho (see "warm and cozy" above :) ) would be just the thing to wear on Christmas.

I went fabric scouring at JOANN and came across some deliciously plaid knits. I wanted to cozy up on this shelf with these fabrics, not gonna lie :)

Plaiditudes

How perfectly plaid is this?

BUT WAIT. The best part - look at that reversible fabric.

Plaid Fabric #3

I just went from making a holiday poncho to a holiday REVERSIBLE poncho. I'm going to get a TON of wear out of this puppy.

IMG_4611 - Before 1 (1).JPG

This project is super easy and can really be crafted by anyone. Sewer, non-sewer - there's no judgment here!

To start, you'll need a yard and a half of fabric. I got two yards and then trimmed a portion off that I think is going to become a scarf in 5, 4, 3, 2…

Steps - Poncho.png

Fold your fabric in half lengthwise and mark the center of your fabric at the crease on the top of the fabric with some pins. This is where the back of your neck will be touching the fabric!

Next trim a straight line on the top layer of fabric. (Remember the fabric is folded and we only want the line to be cut on the top layer.) Trim from the bottom up to where your pins are at the crease.

Steps 2 - Poncho.png

You're almost there! See how much fray is at the bottom of the fabric? (PS. THAT FRAY CRAY!)

An easy straight stitch around all the edges of your fabric will help prevent more fraying if you're using a woven fabric.

Steps 3 - Poncho.png

For those non-sewers out there, go for a fleece or flannel which won't fray and require a stitch! Some say that's cheating? I say that's being successful at managing time :)

VOILA. New poncho out in action.

Poncho After 2

It's seasonal, it's reversible, and it's just so easy to craft!

Poncho - After

I'm going to be wearing my Christmas poncho wayyyyyyy after this tree is taken down!

Poncho After 4

And there's nothing like photo shoot outtakes...

Poncho Outtakes

...I was in the way of all the kiddos trying to get tree pics!

Poncho After 4

I made a bunch of friends in my new poncho!

One poncho, endless poncho-bilities. YOU GUYS. Come on.
