My Mother's Attic: December

The lovely Ashley has been contributing for the past year and her final post has arrived! So sad to see her go (she's not gone forever...she'll be back with some special posts now and again) but so grateful to have had a lovely new voice here at NDAD. All the pieces she's created and worn directly from her mother's and grandmother's closets have made me swoon and today's are no different. Ash, you're a gem. Thank you for sharing your creativity with us. xo My final My Mother's Attic of the year! Twelve posts! Where on earth did the time go? I cannot thank you all enough for welcoming me into this lovely, supportive community. I learned so much this year. It was really fun to go back and review the year of looks and be reminded of just how far I've come. My goal was to learn the basics of sewing, and thanks to Marisa and this column, I no longer fear my sewing machine! Hoo-rah!

This final post was a fun way for me to pull together the essence of this project and show off the skills I've acquired. My mother grew up in Jakarta, Indonesia in the 50s. My grandmother, a woman of her era, would purchase classic Indonesia batik fabrics and then ship them back to the U.S. to have a seamstress turn them into dresses in the latest American styles. I am so very lucky that my mother held on to two of these pieces, and they are in AMAZING condition (and fit me. Bonus!).

The batik fabric is so unique and special, and both dresses have a timeless essence. I love that I can so easily wear them today.

I had the joy of discovering a stash of leftover batik fabric from my mother's childhood in Indonesia. It had been sitting in a pile in my "craft" closet for years. I knew I wanted to create a quilt out of the material for my mother, but had no idea where to begin. Thanks to this year of regularly working with my sewing machine (and tackling a small baby quilt project this summer), I felt I could finally handle the project.

I used the scrap fabric to piece together a lap quilt. I lined the back with a marbled, navy flannel. It's super cozy, and I love love love that it incorporates that leftover fabric into a piece that my mother can truly use and enjoy.

During a super snowy day this December, James and I ventured outside to shoot both the quilt and dresses together. I styled the looks using a vintage fur coat of my great-grandmother's (mother to the batik dress owner :))

(I KNOW the fur is going to upset some people, and I hear you! But this piece dates back to the early 1900s. There is no way I could ever part with it. And on a really cold day, it sure is warm).

The longer dress has tons of fabric and can be an amazing formal ensemble. In fact, I wore it to my engagement party back in 2007 when James and I were first engaged. The short shift dress I wear to work and the style feels very Jackie O.

The scarf I'm wearing is a classic fisherman's style scarf hand knit by my great-grandmother for my mother when she lived in Paris in the 70s.

These images bring me so much joy as they showcase the generations of women that have influenced by style, while also showing the skills I've acquired this year thanks to being a part of the New Dress A Day community. Thank you for letting me share these stories with all of you. Happy happy happiest New Year to all!

Rachel's NDAD Creation: Holiday Edition

It's holiday party time!!  Rachel just sent in her fantabulous costume she wore for a shindig last weekend and I had to share as there are still tons of festive events going on.

Hi Marisa, I LOVE your site and have been following you since the beginning.  I think my outfit was slightly influenced by your Goodwill finds and posts.  I decided to wear a red dress for our Xmas party.  One of our thrift stores runs a weekly sale - every Monday one color tag is on sale for .99 and starting on Tuesday a different color is half off.  The trick is that the prior weeks' leftovers go on sale for .99 on Monday.

I found this dress on a Monday at the thrift store and the price was $10. Being that my only intent was to wear it to our party, I decided to hold off on buying. I went back on Tuesday and lucky for me the dress was now half off!  A $5 dress is still a little more that I wanted to spend, but since I was running out of time I bit the bullet and went for it!

Let's see how Rachel's party dress turns out!

As you can see the dress was nice except for the bleach spot towards the bottom.

I was in charge of baking sweets for the party but had class this week until 9pm, cutting down the time I had to tweak the dress. My intent was to cut and hem, but due to the lack of time, I pulled out the heating tape and some felt leftover from a no-sew blanket that never was. I first cut the dress and then applied the tape on both sides. I cut the collar, added more tape to the underside and voila! My Ms. Claus outfit was complete.

I say Ms. Claus because I don't feel like a Mrs. :) When asked if I was Mrs. Claus I stated, "No, consider me either the Ex-Mrs. Claus or the Sancha (Mistress)"! Ha!

Hope you have a Merry Christmas. Thank you for your inspiration.

You are one hot Claus!! The outfit turned out so great - what a perfect thing to wear to a holiday party!! The belt, the boots - really just making this "Santa" costume current and so cute! I hope you got copious amounts of compliments on it and found yourself underneath the mistletoe with a handsome Santa-lookalike! Your mistress comment totally made me think of one of the sketches on SNL with Paul Rudd playing a slimmed down Santa with a new, non-Mrs. Claus gal pal!

Hysterical.

Happy Holidays to you too, my dear!!

My Mother's Attic: November

I'm loving Ash's post for this month because she uses one of my favorite tricks! I think you guys are going to like... One weekend in November, my husband took my two little girls and our new puppy on a trip to visit his parents. I had to hang back because of some photography gigs, but I didn't mind the rare opportunity to spend time at my own home without any dependents. The uninterrupted sleep was an added bonus.

One evening, I did what any solo mama would do on a treasured night alone... I played dress up! I pulled racks of vintage dresses of my mom's, grandmother's and great-grandmother's that I've got stashed in our basement and spent an hour or so trying on various pieces that hadn't seen the light of day in years. Sadly, many of the extremely old and delicate pieces are ripped or stained or torn in ways that aren't salvageable for everyday use. But I have a grand vision of some of these dresses from the '20s from my great-grandmother being hung on a wall in a bedroom to showcase this history. Here is the snap from Instagram I shared of this flapper dress...

...(the silk is torn in so many places, but it is a treasure!) that is by far my favorite (despite the tears). I'll definitely share photos if/when I make that dress wall happen!

Among that pile of dresses was this knit, cream dress that my mother claims was her Momo's (my great-grandmother who was born in 1901).

 The yarn was badly tea-stained...

...and there were a number of holes in the pattern.

I got in the NDAD mindset, and did something I would never have thought to do prior to meeting Maris! I decided to...

...dye it to cover the stains and give it new life.

A quick bath in navy blue dye...

...and some mending on those holes and it was ready for layering. Since it needs an under layer, I went a little wild and put it over this plaid Ace & Jig dress to add warmth to the ensemble.

I call my style "Hobo Chic," and I realize that this particular choice of layering may border on more hobo than chic...

...but I personally love a wild, layered look.

I was able to stay cozy over Thanksgiving despite the cool temps, and snuggle up with Francis Turkey (a ridiculous plush turkey that I made for my girls' last Thanksgiving)...

For my final post (how has it been a year!), I'll try to showcase more of the super vintage pieces and pull something special together for you all. It has been too much fun cameo-ing here for the year. (It all began with this tree skirt I made out of an old quilt that my great-auntie's made decades ago that Marisa let me share with this wonderful community last December. I'll be repurposing for life thanks to y'all! Enjoy a happy, safe, festive December. I'll see you before the New Year!
